HEROES
There are those who will throw the word "hero" at anyone for any particular reason. Especially those who have been dealing with a terminal disease or have overcome difficult personal circumstances. I believe those are just situations that you are forced to confront as a participant in the game of life. In my humble opinion, heroes do not expect to be financially rewarded for good deeds that benefit others. For instance, I would not consider myself a hero if I happened to be a fireman or policeman, because it's my job to place my life on the line to protect others. If I don't like what the work requires of me then I always have the option to quit and become a florist or politician.
There are unsung champions out there that we have all taken for granted. And those heroes happen to be laboratory rats and mice. These enslaved creatures are forced to inhale hazardous chemicals, ingest unproven medicine, genetically altered to receive tumors, and purposefully infected with human diseases. It is estimated that over 6 million lab rats and mice are terminated for experimental purposes in the U.S. alone. Yet, humans refuse to pay proper homage to the furry beasts. Currently, there is no statutory holiday called "Rodent Day", nor no statues or monuments paying tribute to their multitude of tiny sacrifices.
